Angela K. Doan

Angela K. Doan ’17 was appointed senior advisor for education in the Salt Lake City (UT) Mayor’s Office. She previously worked for the US Department of Civil Rights, Massachusetts Advocates for Children, and the New England Innocence Project, and taught in the Salt Lake City School District.

New Gig: Salt Lake City Mayor Jackie Biskupski hired Doan as senior advisor for education with a mandate to reform school-discipline policies and enhance early childhood education. Experience: Before law school, taught fourth grade in her hometown of Salt Lake City under a Title I school improvement grant and grew frustrated by the lack of empowerment accorded to teachers. Lesson Learned: “While teaching, I clearly saw gaps between laws and policies and what was actually happening in classrooms.” Attention Getter: Mayor Biskupski was impressed by Doan’s experience with city schools and education policy (at BC, Doan got dual law and masters-in-education degrees). She looks to Doan to help end “the school-to-prison-pipeline.”
