Judges Hold Court

BC Law hosted an oral argument session conducted by the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals so students could see justice in action.

Federal Circuit Court of Appeals judges and attorneys travel to law schools across the nation each year to bring the courtroom to students and the next generation of lawyers. On October 7, three judges and their six clerks came to BC Law to engage the academic community and provide more insight into clerkships and attorney experience.

Judges Kimberly A. Moore (Chief Justice), Sharon Prost, and Richard G. Taranto heard attorneys’ oral arguments in four current cases. Among them was Flygrip, Inc. v PopSockets, LLC, a civil case focusing on accusations of Flygrip infringing on the patent rights of PopSockets.

After the arguments, the judges left the room for deliberation. What followed were two Q&A sessions organized by Associate Professor Cheryl Bratt, co-chair of BC Law’s Clerkship Committee. The first was with the judges’ clerks, the second, with the judges upon their return from deliberations.

The Federal Circuit hears arguments outside of Washington, DC, in order to deliver opportunities for citizens to appear before the court and get involved. The court’s mission is not only educational, but is also centered on restoring faith and trust in the judicial system via panel events.

The judges’ six clerks also answered questions from students during the session.
