Boston College Law School found success at the ABA Negotiations competition this month. 1Ls Elizabeth Ely and Ian Hurley attended the competition, hosted by the University of St. Thomas School of Law in Minneapolis, and advanced to the final round. The team’s success at the regional follows their victory in BC’s internal competition, where they competed against 1Ls Maria Sharipova and Bennett Demsky.
The regional competition focused on issues in higher education. Each team received a general
information sheet containing confidential client information, with the situation varying through
each round of the competition. Ely and Hurley received praise throughout. Judges complimented them for their outstanding preparation, exemplary demeanor and professionalism, and creativity in theorizing solutions that would benefit all parties involved. Thus, did they progress until the final matchup, when the team from Tulane University School of Law prevailed.
Their efforts were nontheless impressive, said Rosemary Daly, BC Law’s negotiations coach and advocacy advisor. “Elizabeth and Ian displayed a talent for negotiation that matched that of seasoned attorneys and were just outstanding,” she said.
In another competition last week, 3Ls Allison Carvalho and Katherine Kossoy advanced to the quarterfinals of the 35th Annual National Criminal Procedure Tournament, which was held in San Diego.
According to Professor Robert Bloom ’71, Carvalho and Kossoy were faced with an extremely short briefing schedule in preparing for the competition and worked very hard honing their arguments. “The team,” he said, “was fantastic.”
