Amy Lai was awarded the 2021 PEN Canada/Ken Filkow Prize for her extensive scholarship on freedom of expression. A lawyer, legal scholar, and journalist, she has reported extensively on the “threats faced by both individuals and democratic institutions” in her native Hong Kong and the passage of the controversial Hong Kong national security law. She is the author of The Right to Parody published by Cambridge University Press in 2019 and currently teaches a course on freedom of expression at Freie Universitat in Berlin, Germany.
