Faculty Scholarship

Faculty Milestones

Faculty achievements far and wide.

Around the Globe: Paulo Barrozo was quoted in two Vox articles about Brazil’s 2022 presidential election and its impact. Paul Tremblay’s co-authored textbook Lawyers as Counselors: A Client-Centered Approach received approval from West Academic Publishing to be translated to Japanese. Tremblay credits this success to the book’s focus on behavioral psychology rather than legal doctrine. David Wirth led a delegation of Boston College faculty and students to attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.

In the Know: Five faculty provided expertise to the media on recent legal issues: Cathleen Kaveny wrote about Justice Alito’s majority opinion on Dobbs in a Commonweal symposium and served as a panelist on WGBH about the decision’s impact on public health. Daniel Lyons wrote in an AEI blog about whether a Universal Service Fund surcharge placed on customers’ telecommunications bills is constitutional, as it reaches the Fifth Circuit. Top media outlets continued to call upon Jeff Cohen and Brian Quinn’s expertise on the Elizabeth Holmes trial and Elon Musk-Twitter deal, respectively. In the Wall Street Journal, Thomas Kohler commented on averting a rail shutdown.

Timely Discussion: Thomas Barnico wrote an op-ed in Commonwealth Magazine about Massachusetts’s proposed wealth tax and whether it would cause high earning residents to migrate. Michael Cassidy was quoted in the Associated Press about the fight to close the clergy loophole in child sex abuse reporting. Bijal Shah discussed the power dynamics between the Presidency, Supreme Court, and Congress at a Yale Journal on Regulation symposium.

Another Year, Another Victory: Under the direction of Sharon Beckman, the BC Innocence Program received its third Department of Justice grant, this one for $500K. The program will use the grant in partnership with the Committee for Public Counsel Services to increase staff capacity to investigate and litigate postconviction innocence cases. In November, Beckman and program representatives won a court case vacating the murder conviction of their fourth client in the past three years.
