Jennifer Smith

Jennifer Smith is executive director of the International Legal Foundation, where she works to establish quality defense legal aid to post-conflict and developing countries. She is in Ramallah in the West Bank and travels extensively in Afghanistan, Tunisia, Nepal, and Myanmar. Professor Francine Sherman ’80is collaborating with Smith and the ILF on implementing a developmental approach to juvenile justice representation in the West Bank to define and measure quality representation for juveniles.

       

Endeavor: Works to establish criminal and juvenile public defender systems in war-torn and developing countries. Why?: Without defense lawyers, the accused are vulnerable to arbitrary detention, coerced and tortured confessions, wrongful convictions, and other abuses. Special Project: Working with West Bank legal aid lawyers and Professor Francine Sherman to build a logic model to define and measure quality representation for juveniles.
