Maria Hickey

Maria Hickey transitioned from the role of trial attorney at the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families to the agency’s newly created Legal Training and Staff Development Coordinator. Maria previously worked at DCF as a Deputy Regional Counsel from 1994-2000, before joining the Massachusetts Office of the Attorney General and opening the Central Mass Regional Office in Worcester. Her love of child welfare law and children’s issues brought her back to DCF in 2014.

Maria’s Other Love: Running. Her Quest: To run a half marathon in every state and to run a full marathon on every continent. Stats: By the end of 2023, she will have run half marathons in 25 states and full marathons in US (Boston and Chicago) and Europe (Dublin, London, and Berlin). Training: Attends a summer running camp at Craftsbury in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont where she is trained by Olympians. Bonus: “Craftsbury, in collaboration with a nonprofit, has provided me with the opportunity to share my love of running with children in DCF foster care by offering a scholarship to a high school student in DCF foster care to attend the camp.” Fun Adventure: “Having read about ‘Dennis’ (pictured above) in the BC Law Magazine, I visited him at the San Antonio Museum of Art after I completed the Alamo Half Marathon earlier that morning (State #22 in my quest).”
