McCoy Named Fellow of Top Financial Services Group

Consumer welfare leader brings honor to BC Law with her new affiliation.

The American College of Consumer Financial Services Lawyers has elected Boston College Law Professor Patricia A. McCoy as a Fellow. The honor recognizes lawyers particularly skilled and experienced in handling consumer financial services matters and dedicated to the improvement and enhancement of the skill and practice of consumer financial services law and the ethics of the profession.

As the Liberty Mutual Insurance Professor at BC Law, McCoy focuses her scholarship on the nexus among financial services, consumer welfare, and systemic risk. In 2010-2011, she was appointed the first assistant director of mortgage markets at the newly formed Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in Washington, DC, where she oversaw all of the bureau’s mortgage policy initiatives. She has also served on the Consumer Advisory Council of the Federal Reserve Board and the Advisory Council on Economic Inclusion of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. Currently, she sits on the Federal Reserve’s Insurance Policy Advisory Council.

McCoy received her JD from the University of California at Berkeley and served as editor-in-chief of the Industrial Relations Law Journal. Later, she clerked for the late Hon. Robert S. Vance on the US Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. Before entering academe, she was a partner at the law firm of Mayer, Brown in Washington, DC. She was subsequently a visiting scholar at the MIT Economics Department in 2002-2003.

McCoy has three books to her credit, including The Subprime Virus (Oxford University Press), which was written with Kathleen C. Engel and won ACCFSL’s award for Best Book on Consumer Financial Services of 2011.

Her professional affiliations include the American Law Institute, Americans for Financial Reform Education Fund, and Insurance Policy Advisory Council of the Federal Reserve Board. She is past chair of the American Association of American Law Schools Section on Financial Institutions and Consumer Financial Services.
