The BC Law Black Alumni Network (BAN) and the Black Law Students Association (BLSA) teamed up on August 27 to host their annual Welcome BBQ for incoming BC Law students. The celebration served to connect an emerging new generation of Black lawyers with alumni, making for a beautiful afternoon of networking, community-building, and plenty of delicious food.
Members of both organizations gathered at the home of Arianne Waldron ‘14, president of BAN, for the event, which has become a beloved tradition for both organizations. The annual BBQ kicks off a year of special programs hosted by BLSA, including a Kwanzaa celebration and Black History Month panels.
BLSA works to foster a supportive environment for incoming students as they begin their careers at BC Law, providing mentorship opportunities, educational programs, and professional connections. The student organization closely collaborates with the National Black Law Students Association and other local chapters to strengthen and support the Black legal community in Boston.
Earlier this year, BAN and BLSA hosted their annual Ruth-Arlene Howe Heritage Banquet, where the organizations surprised the 89-year old professor emerita and event namesake with a special Lifetime Achievement award in honor of her years of service and engagement with the BC Law community. Professor Howe arrived at BC Law as a student in 1970 and spent nearly four decades teaching and mentoring prior to retiring in 2008. Howe continues to serve as director emerita of BAN’s board of directors.
