Michael Goldman

An article by Michael Goldman about his Supreme Court win, “After Sixty-Eight Years of Darkness, It’s a New Dawn in Marine Insurance Law,” was published in the Winter 2025 issue of the Tulane Maritime Law Journal. In Great Lakes Ins. SE v. Raiders Retreat Realty Co., the Supreme Court determined that choice-of-law clauses in marine insurance policies must be followed, and state laws can’t override them.

Landmark Triumph: Goldman wrote “After Sixty-Eight Years of Darkness, It’s a New Dawn in Marine Insurance Law” (Tulane Maritime Law Journal) after winning a Supreme Court victory. “The ruling sends a powerful message to the lower courts that uniformity in federal admiralty law remains a paramount virtue,” he said. Navigating Maritime Writing: “The hardest part of drafting my article was to…briefly explain various principles of federal admiralty, which most practitioners are unfamiliar with. The Supreme Court hasn’t taken a marine insurance case since 1955, and admiralty jurisdiction is not even mentioned in most 1L civil procedure classes.” Valuable Lessons: He credits his legal preparation to Professor Gregory A. Kalscheur, SJ, who taught him civil procedure, and Professor Joan Blum, who taught him legal research and writing.
