JUDGES WHO GAVE THEIR ALL
Hon. Herbert P. Wilkins, a Massachusetts Supreme Court justice who, upon retirement, taught at BC Law as the Huber Distinguished Visiting Professor from 1999 to 2014, passed away this past May at the age of ninety-five.
Well-liked and admired by faculty and students alike, Wilkins had an impact that lingers in many places, among them in the classroom of Professor Daniel Lyons, who teaches one of Wilkins’s cases in his Property class. Wilkins’s contributions to the Law School included sitting as a judge in the annual Wendell F. Grimes Moot Court Competition.
He was also a powerhouse in the justice system. Renée Landers ’85 said of him in a Boston Globe remembrance: “He took his obligations seriously.” And Arnold R. Rosenfeld ’67 once wrote a law review article that praised Wilkins for his efforts to modernize Massachusetts’ ethical rules, a comment cited in a Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly tribute to Wilkins in June.
Wilkins was not the only state supreme court justice who had their say at BC Law decades ago and passed away this year. Hon. Dorothy Chin Brandt, who made history as the first Asian American woman judge in New York and eventually became acting justice of the New York State Supreme Court, taught at BC Law from 1976-1978 while also serving as assistant dean of graduate legal studies at Harvard Law. She died this past January.

Tricia has always showcased BC Law and our commitments with the highest integrity,” said Associate Dean for Experiential Learning Claire Donohue. “She has endless energy and empathy for students, engaging with them carefully and thoughtfully, and providing them with the highest level of student advising.
