Unexpected Calling: John Doherty never expected to become a lawyer. During the Vietnam War, he was unexpectedly assigned as a trial counsel prosecuting court-martial cases despite having no formal legal training. “Strangely, I found that I enjoyed it,” he said. In Practice: That experience shaped Doherty’s decades-long career as a district and US attorney. “You get to see people doing things under extreme stress,” he reflected, a perspective that informed both his courtroom advocacy and his understanding of human nature. Curiosity: Doherty’s drive to keep learning never faded. At 83, he earned a master’s degree in history from the University of Massachusetts Lowell, graduating with distinction. For Doherty, staying intellectually engaged has always been essential, reminding others to “use your brain while you still have it.”
