Hon. Miriam Mattinen Shearing was honored with the 2021 Silver State Award by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas for her support to the university and the community, and in 2019 was a recipient of the Distinguished Nevadan Award conferred by the Board of Regents of the Nevada System of Higher Education. A trailblazer throughout her forty-year career, she was the first female to serve as a district court judge, a juvenile court judge, and a justice and chief justice of the Supreme Court of Nevada. Since retirement, Shearing has focused on philanthropy and education and continues an interest in literature by supporting fellowships for young writers as a member of UNLV’s Black Mountain Institute.
